When it comes to organizing, there is no free lunch. Whether you are printing fliers or arranging transportation for volunteers, all costs come out of pocket.
Most volunteer activists patch together funds to carry out their work, yet they will soon have help from a new grant for the grassroots. Not a full free lunch, perhaps, but an appetizer.
Clean & Prosperous America is offering grants of up to $2,500 per group working on voter engagement. The grants are only offered to groups working in states and regions identified on the map below. (The group itself does not need to be based in one of these states.)
Grants are open to nonprofits, LLCs, and volunteer-led groups. The RFP (request for proposal) is designed to take less than 30 minutes to complete (see link below). The first application deadline is May 15, 2024
“Clean & Prosperous America believes that entrusting grassroots, community-based organizations to directly engage voters is the most effective way to win critical races up and down the ballot,” said CaPA director Greg Rock. But finding these groups, Rock added, has been difficult.
After launching CaPA in 2019, Rock has spent four years looking for, and funding, a wide variety of grassroots organizations but true volunteer-led organizations have been the most difficult to locate. Because these smaller, often unaffiliated, grassroots groups are generally under-resourced and working below the radar, Rock said, “it can be challenging to learn about their efforts and find contact information.”
Enter the Grassroots Directory, now online through the Grassroots Collaborative Project. (Full disclosure: The GCP is the parent organization of the Grassroots Connector.)
“We were thrilled to find the Grassroots Directory,” Rock said. “We're excited to learn more about organizations’ work through our RFP process and do what we can to ensure that voter engagement efforts are adequately resourced.”
The CaPA grant is a micro-grant for groups needing funds to integrate electoral activities into their regular programing, support volunteer-led efforts, or to help foster new low-cost creative ideas. Requests of under $1,000 are encouraged.
Reminder: The priority deadline for proposals is May 15, 2024, but CaPA will be reviewing proposals on a rolling basis until the election.
