Does anyone have the language for HB630? The Maryland state legislature, alerted by Project Salt Box, is already considering a bill (HB 630) which would prohibit the operation of immigration detention facilities in structures not originally designed or constructed for housing or detaining people. This bill could serve as a model for legislative action elsewhere.
Urgent open letters to Attorneys General, governors, and legislatures in our states?
Thank you for shining a bright light on this! Privately-owned, for-profit prisons have no place in a free society! This is just another step toward Nazi Germany's gulag of concentration camps! We must resist!
This isn’t being talked about enough!!!!!! Rachel’s reporting was amazing and haunting!!!! How do we get this out there for others to be equally outraged???!!!!
Thank you so much for sharing our project! I'm overjoyed to see that the information is really making a difference in your communities and raising awareness. We've seen all over the country that communities are banding together to stop these purchases and it's actually working!
I’m looking for systemic ways to stop or slow ICE expansion, especially across NYS. I’m starting to focus on nuances in the supremacy clause that will stop ICE from overriding/ignoring state requirements; and also at state state tax policy and other state levers that might be used to get private property owners to stop leasing or selling real estate to ICE for detention or other ICE operations. If anyone has suggestions that might be applicable to NY, please let me know. We are seeing a buildup of back office ICE facilities on Long Island. We don’t know if it’s to support growing ICE activity here or to support detentions in NYC, or both. But it’s all bad and we need to act urgently - and identify/implement every strategy - even if it just slows down ICE it will be a partial win.
Make no mistake, these are not "detention" camps. They are Concentration Camps. Detention is a word used to sanitize their mission. In WWII, Jews were considered illegal aliens too, so they were thrown into these Camps to perish. Civilians were told they were there waiting to be deported to where they really belonged and we all know what the Nazis meant by that. History is repeating itself but with a new leader on a different continent.

The time to act is now. Find and join a nearby chapter of a group such as Indivisible https://indivisible.org/ and become a pro-democracy activist. Work toward bringing the 3.5% rule within our reach: https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20190513-it-only-takes-35-of-people-to-change-the-world . It may be our best/last hope of setting things right.
