By Judy Loeb, Seniors Taking Action
This morning I awoke and immediately checked to make sure I’d received this month’s Social Security payment. This is not something I’ve ever had to worry about before. Receiving my Social Security check was a sure thing, same as death and taxes!
Not anymore. Under this administration, the services that seniors have spent their life supporting and paying into are under direct attack.
Every day I hear another horror story. A woman who waited in line at a Social Security Office for four hours while leaning on her walker was told that her appointment had been converted to a phone call and that somebody would reach out to her. Another person waited on the phone for six hours - SIX HOURS! - only to be hung up on. Adding to that, we are being advised to save a hard copy of our Social Security account documents as phone service is being severely curtailed by the Muskrats and it may soon become impossible to access records online.
This should be the proverbial straw that breaks the camel’s back, but amidst the furious tide of horrifying news, it’s just one more thing. Nevertheless, to seniors like myself, this is a five-alarm fire.
I am part of a group called Seniors Taking Action. We started in 2019 writing postcards and supporting candidates. During COVID we started Zoom meetings. We now have 1000+ members in 15 states. As our name implies, we are older activists doing all we can to fight the Trump agenda, especially the defunding of Medicaid and the dismantling of Social Security.
With the administration’s direct assault on seniors we now go to protests and are upping our direct action.
Gathering Stories of Social Security Disruptions
With Social Security disruptions growing, Attorneys General in several states are leading the charge to document these stories in an effort to collect data needed for a lawsuit against the Trump administration. Attorneys General in Arizona and Michigan have put up forms on their official websites asking for seniors to report Social Security disruptions.
Please call or write to your state Attorney General and urge them to work with their counterparts in other states to sue the Administration to PROTECT OUR BENEFITS. To find your state Attorney General, go here. Please also consider writing to your governor and senators as well.
Forming a Senior Council
We are interested in amplifying our voices by joining with other senior groups or any groups who have seniors in their ranks. Robert Hubbell, author of Today's Edition Newsletter, and a strong advocate of grassroots organizing, has agreed to moderate a discussion amongst our group leaders which hopefully will result in coordinating some messaging and actions. If you are interested in partnering with us to form a "Senior Council" please contact me at judyloeb2@gmail.com.
There is strength in numbers. Seniors represent the largest voting block. And yet, this administration is determined to hurt everyone except billionaires. It’s time for the gray resistance to start flexing our muscles.
I'm an admin of a group called Silver Resistance. This newsletter was so welcome and timely -- I posted it to the whole group. Hope it gets you lots of new subscribers!
