Thank you for this beautiful description of the phenomenon that I have been blessed to experience firsthand. When a group of us sat down that first time during the FIRST, first 100 days to write Women's March postcards to the White House, none of us ever imagined that we would still be at it 8 years later.
Despite the best efforts of authors like Simon Rosenberg and Heather Cox Richardson, the power of the grassroots seems to continue to fly under the radar. (but we are here!)
During these years, our skill sets have been honed, relationships strengthened, and scope broadened. Yet the "organization" remains fluid. It is magical, as are the deep friendships that have grown spontaneously from this work.
I don't know where I would be without the various grassroots communities that I hold dear. I recognized that I had been way too complaisant after the 2016 election and haven't looked back since.
But I am still trying to come to grips with the number of people who either thought voting for Trump or staying home was a good idea in November. I'm firmly in the camp that when someone shows you who they are you should believe them. What were people thinking!!!
I'm not sure of the solution, but I am NOT giving up!!
Please keep in mind that billionaires in power love nothing more than inflame our ideological differences. It will be a lot easier to change people perspectives when there aren’t billionaires in power with an incentive to promote the pillars of our differences.
Thank you for sharing. I would ask that we strive to be broad in our view on who are community is. We need to create grass roots togetherness even if we don’t agree on things for those moments that most of us will agree. Too many big hearted grass roots leaders get caught up in the need to fight for their positions. We need to keep in mind that we will need all of to combat wealth oppression. We are faced with a wealth created wealth crises. Work should be rewarded not wealth. Those who do should be rewarded, those who have done should be rewarded, those who gave more than they were supposed to should be rewarded and those who need should be seen. Instead we live in a world where the stock markets have tripled in value over the last 7 years; and with the promotion of crypto it will go higher. This is simply a tool to multiply wealth. Workers all over the world are losing buying power. Billionaires are out of control. Most of us should have common ground. Wealth tax, not income or corporate tax is our solution. While I’m sure from your. While I am sure I would be with you on many issues we must Stop the noise that keeps us apart. We must have the ability to access a powerful majority. Oligarchy are benefited by the confusion. Tolerate opinions to create strength to stop universal unfair behavior of the few.
Podhorzer is incorrect as he is talking about "eligible" voters, not the voters who voted for Biden. Biden got 81,282,632 votes in 2020 while Trump had 74,223,234 votes, a difference of 7,059,398 votes. (Source - Ballotpedia)
