Pageantry has its place in the movement to preserve democracy. With this “how-to” article, Charlottesville organizers hope to inspire readers to stage their own performances.
First, thank you for producing and sharing this impactful piece of guerilla theater. Second, and as important, thank you for the clearly laid out process for thinking through how to put a guerilla theater event together, including considerations, and post event lessons learned. This sharing stands as a valuable resource for others to consider trying their hand this type of production.
Glad you liked it! We hope that other groups will give similar creative efforts a try (or stage some version of ours if they want to do something already worked out as a first effort).
This is mind blowing. I’m a member of Indivisible Santa Cruz County. We’ve been doing signs of fascism and democracy popups and trying to imagine the next step and your post has given us so much inspiration.
Kudos to an amazing action; genius from my hometown.
Hi, Jan. I'm so glad you feel inspired by this article. This was totally new ground for our Indivisible Cville group, and we'd love to learn from other groups. If you'd care to share what your group has been doing with these pop-ups and possible future street theatre actions, we'd love to hear.
So good to hear! I used to live in San Jose, loved your town as a getaway for a weekend. Keep up the good work there (read about various Indivisible events you guys have pulled off)!
The end was joyful, but it was a very emotional (but very positive!) experience for a lot of those involved… rewarding more than fun. See for example my interview with the lead actress, Lady Liberty: https://nowcomment.com/documents/412686

This is extremely interesting. I’m an artist and I’ve been trying to figure out how to combine art and activism. Thanks for this 😊🙏
Fantastic! Kudos to all involved!

Ditto for us at the Connector. Please consider sending in an article about pop-ups!

Who knew fighting fascism could be so fun 😂
